When I told my mates and family that I had qualified to be a life coach they were a little perplexed. None of them had heard of Life Coaching and had no clue as to what it all meant. Much like myself, I must confess, when I started on my new road into the coaching field.
We all understand the concept of a coach when referring to a sports team. The coach will guide the players to achieve the common goal of winning the final and they also guide the players when they are having performance difficulties or problems. Life coaching is much the same beast.
Life coaches can help guide you towards a dream or a goal you have long had, though perhaps had a lack of confidence or drive to follow through. Coaches never give advice; however, they will help come up with your own solid steps in moving forward with your goal and making it really happen. Goals could be anything from cessation of a habit, working towards a life dream or cleaning out that damn garage. There really is no limit to what goals you can be coached on.
Coaching is also a brilliant mechanism for overcoming a life challenges or problems. Again advice is not given, which is very important for someone to make lasting change. Being told what to do is likely to be less effective. Think about it, none of us really like being told what to do. If someone tells you to do something aren’t you more likely to say “yeah, yeah” and then do what you want to do anyway. Same principle in coaching; lasting change can only occur if you are empowered with and by your own ideas. Coaches help facilitate this process and are able to open your mind further to endless possibilities.
I should also point out that coaching is no NO WAY the same as counselling. Coaching is focused on the client creating their own idea and steps to move forward and we do not discuss or dwell in the past. Coaching is about action and coming up with steps to move forward to the life you want.
In the words of Lao Tzu, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
Peace,
Bec
