Types of Coaching

Coaching takes on many forms and can be applied to different areas of your life and is not limited by age, occupation, religion or gender; or anything for that matter. A certified life coach is able to coach anyone from teenagers to executives.

Coaching for teenagers will help the kids empower themselves and grow to make decisions. Teenagers often feel like they are being told what to do and parents sometimes are too close to the situation to be an effective listener for them. A coach will never give them advise or tell them what to do but listen to them and question them so they can make their own decisions as maturing young adults.

Coaching in general terms is for people who are looking to make a significant change to their life but are unsure of how to take the first steps. Many clients come to coaches as they have a life issue that they are unable to come to a resolution with. In either case, the coach will guide the client to making the best possible steps forward for them.

Career coaching empowers clients to enhance their current career profession or to make a radical change to their career. This is a powerful progression in defining exactly what you want to do and be happy and fulfilled in your development.

Executive coaching as the name suggests is tailored to executives who may be looking for some personal coaching based on their own career. In addition, executives come to coaches to empower them to develop their teams. These are just some of the areas that clients can be coached.

What happens in a session?

Lots of great stuff can happen in sessions! As far as the structure of the sessions goes together we would review the action items that were developed in the previous session. This enables us to keep you on track and iron out any issues you may have, such as being unable to follow through on agreed steps to take. After all this is about you moving forward and if something is stopping that from happening it is best we look at that right away.

Secondly, we set goals for the current session working with you the coach will help you to articulate and identify the goal for the session.  Next we would look at where you are now with regard to the goal or issue, and then explore possible options that may help you to move forward. Lastly we will agree on the actions you plan to take as a next step and summarise what has been agreed upon.

This structure in the session enables you to really look at the goal or issue from every angle so that you can come up with the best ideas and possible plan forward. During the session if you feel stuck I am happy to offer you suggestions; however, the basis of coaching is for you to come up with the best solutions for you, not the coach. Therefore, there will be little, if at all, advice giving from the coach.

It is not uncommon when discussing our goals or issues to get carried away and get off track a little. In this instance I may interrupt you in the session; this is not in any way to be rude or showing lack of care. It is done so that we remain on track and work with the details at hand, so that you get the best value out of your session.

As a coach I am completely committed to you and your goals. The session discussions are held in the strictest confidence. Confidentially is of upmost importance in coaching so that you feel at ease to get to the real heart of the problem without judgement or criticism. That way you will be able to put your best foot forward.

Peace, Bec

Why do I need a Life Coach?

“Can’t I just get my friends or family members to coach me?” Well you can if you like, but it can open up a sour can of worms and might get you more bogged in the ditch. Of course we talk to friends and family about issues; although, how often are we given advice we don’t need or did not ask for. How often are their opinions ever so gently and kindly forced down our throats. It can and does happen and can result in conflict and you are not really moving anywhere or any the wiser.

Also families can actually be part of your goal or issue and having them involved can make it extremely difficult to come to a resolution and tough to move forward for a better life for you.

Coaches are trained to help you discover your full potential, sometimes well meaning family members can get in the way of our goals. In my case, for example, I travelled to South East Asia and completely fell in love with a country, culture and the food of that country. I felt a strong connection to the place. So strong that I went home and told my family and friends I was packing in my 11 year IT career to move to South East Asia.  Of course I was given a lot of advice and much of it was deterring me from doing it. I knew I had to get this country out of my system and wanted to go but the nay sayers in my family really impacted my thoughts and  that made me question my intended actions. Luckily I was able to work through it and make my own decisions with the help of a coach and made the move where I spent 8 happy years.

So you can see from my own story friends and family can throw a spanner in the works by giving advice and deterring you from making changes in your life that are potentially fufulling and perhaps the best move you have ever made. Life coaches will never dissuade you from your goals but have the skills to help you to come up with the best solutions and decisions for you.

Peace,

Bec

What's this Life Coaching palaver?

When I told my mates and family that I had qualified to be a life coach they were a little perplexed. None of them had heard of Life Coaching and had no clue as to what it all meant. Much like myself, I must confess, when I started on my new road into the coaching field.

We all understand the concept of a coach when referring to a sports team. The coach will guide the players to achieve the common goal of winning the final and they also guide the players when they are having performance difficulties or problems. Life coaching is much the same beast.

Life coaches can help guide you towards a dream or a goal you have long had, though perhaps had a lack of confidence or drive to follow through. Coaches never give advice; however, they will help come up with your own solid steps in moving forward with your goal and making it really happen. Goals could be anything from cessation of a habit, working towards a life dream or cleaning out that damn garage. There really is no limit to what goals you can be coached on.

Coaching is also a brilliant mechanism for overcoming a life challenges or problems. Again advice is not given, which is very important for someone to make lasting change. Being told what to do is likely to be less effective. Think about it, none of us really like being told what to do. If someone tells you to do something aren’t you more likely to say “yeah, yeah” and then do what you want to do anyway. Same principle in coaching; lasting change can only occur if you are empowered with and by your own ideas. Coaches help facilitate this process and are able to open your mind further to endless possibilities.

I should also point out that coaching is no NO WAY the same as counselling. Coaching is focused on the client creating their own idea and steps to move forward and we do not discuss or dwell in the past. Coaching is about action and coming up with steps to move forward to the life you want.

In the words of Lao Tzu, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

Peace,

Bec
